One of the first and largest mosques built in Islamic Egypt. It was built in 878 by Sultan Ahmed Ibn Tulun, the founder of the Tulunid dynasty who ruled Egypt for over a century. The mosque is well known for its gypsum ornaments and fine engravings. It has a unique spiral minaret with an external staircase constituting the only example of minarets in Egypt.
